Going Fast or Going Far?

There was a time when I took great pride in achieving accomplishments on my own.  Grinding through obstacles, head down, never considering asking for help.  This was not all that long ago.  For some reason, anything I achieved in this manner was more meaningful than it would have been if I had reached out and accepted support from those around me.

Being introduced to the African proverb, "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together," set me on the path of changing my very limited way of thinking.

Last week, I had numerous opportunities to experience the power of community and the transformative nature of being surrounded and supported by others.

Last week marked the CAMH Sunrise challenge, a fundraiser where participants are encouraged to wake up early enough to see the sunrise while raising funds for mental health initiatives.  This meant dips that began much earlier than our usual timing, and although we tend to be early risers, those extra minutes in the morning do make a difference.  And yet, there we were, clustered on the shore, gazing in wonder at the sky and sharing our lives with each other.  Not a morning goes by that I am not left feeling seen, held, and grounded by this experience, and I know that I am not alone in the feeling of being propelled forward by the strength of this dedicated group of badass women.

At the gym, we embarked on a week-long workout series that challenged us physically and mentally as we pushed ourselves to tackle novel movement stations in a high-intensity circuit.  Despite this being a timed challenge, the hoots and hollers that were given to all participants, interspersed with expletives and laughter, were uplifting.  Despite coming to the workout with some uncertainty, we all seemed to leave on a high note, infused by endorphins and dopamine, brought forward by the physical exertion combined with the incredible community vibes that were present.

Despite these being notable reminders, Sunday provided the best example of the incredible impact of community.  We gathered at the beach for a dip, followed by a potluck brunch where we celebrated notable milestones in our lives.  Listening to the accomplishments and achievements that were shared in our circle was nothing short of breathtaking.  And as we acknowledged each other, there was gratitude given for the role that our community has had in the growth we have each experienced.  When I think back to where I was in my life when I first stepped foot in the lake and immersed myself in the water and was welcomed into the group, versus where I now find myself, I can hardly believe it.  I know without a doubt that many of the goals I have reached and dreams I have realized have been aided in a large part by the unwavering support I have received day in and day out.  I may have done much of the hard work, but that effort was amplified by the knowledge that all I needed to do was keep showing up as myself.  There was no energy wasted on trying to be someone I am not, and even less energy spent worrying about what others might think.

So yes, although there might still be moments in life where I might think that going fast is my goal, deep down I know that I would much rather pool my energy, link arms and hearts with my people, and see how far we can go together.
