Timing is Everything
Recently, I was chatting with a friend about life, noticing how looking back at the past can sometimes make us question the choices we have made. What seemed to make sense when we were in the thick of a situation doesn't always hold up when we have a better perspective of the bigger picture. Looking back at our past selves allows us to be more critical of who we were and provides the opportunity to either beat ourselves up or learn lessons that will shape our future behaviours, and can be counterproductive if we start to ruminate and become stuck in the past. As we continued to talk, she turned to me and said, "Timing is everything", which felt so simple and yet so true.
Who we are is only relevant in the current moment. We are ever-changing and evolving beings on a physical, emotional, and spiritual level. How we approach a situation will not be the same if we are faced with it today versus a few days from now, and will likely be different from how we saw things a week or month ago, too. I believe that we can learn from our past and can take these life lessons and apply them in the future, whether that be a day or a year from now.
It's hard to admit that not everything that we hope for is meant for us in the current moment. Sometimes, we are shown the glimmer of a future state we are aiming for, only to be returned to the present moment and our current reality. It is hard to experience a taste of what could be, followed by the truth of what is. It is in these moments that we are reminded about timing. Perhaps we aren't quite ready to make that change or to have that leap forward, and these glimmers are little nudges to keep us on track. It is not easy to hold onto a dream without any sense of moving closer to realizing it.
Patience is hard, and I am someone who tends to lock onto an idea or a goal and then do everything in my power to achieve it as efficiently as possible. Life is showing me that timing and patience are non-negotiables, and there are simply some things in life that we cannot accelerate, no matter how hard we stomp on the gas. Easing up and appreciating that what is meant for me will not miss me requires a level of trust and belief that I have a hard time being comfortable with. And yet, the more I open myself up to the idea of allowing things to happen in their own time, the more at peace I am with the process.
