Detours and Recalibration
Have you had one of those moments where you look in the mirror and wonder who the heck is looking back at you? Maybe the light in the room has cast a different shadow across your face, or you have slowed down enough to actually take in your reflection. What is it that looks different to you? Is is purely physical changes you are noticing, or are there deeper ones that are also calling your attention?
Maybe it is the time of year, or time of life, that has had me examining myself a bit more closely as of late. What stands out the most is how much my path has seemed to drift while managing to bring me closer to home. The coordinates that I originally plotted into my internal GPS have needed to recalibrate more than once over the past few years, and I am certainly glad that they did.
Where did those original coordinates even come from? They seem so off-base and outdated and yet were something that I believed in so deeply and held on to even when I saw many opportunities to take detours along the way. I suppose that they were created internally and reinforced externally, to some extent. There are some paths that we are strongly encouraged to travel and others that are clearly marked "take at your own risk". I am grateful for the love and support that allowed me to venture onto some of these alternate routes and the patience that allowed me to take my time exploring and acclimating myself to the new twists and turns I encountered along the way.
I share this because I know that I am not the only one who is embarking on uncharted territory and who is in need of a lamp to light the way. Fellow travellers I see you and am here for you. You are not alone and if you are in need of someone to check in with or share your experiences with, please reach out. Finding safe spaces can be hard sometimes and can also be pivotal as we maneuver life's twists and turns.
As a new year unfolds before us, so do many opportunities and unknowns. It can be an exciting time of life and also a daunting one. How will we know if we are going the "right" way or if we are putting our energy towards the "right" goals? From what I have experienced, we won't know until much later when we can look back and connect the dots that have led us to where we are currently standing. And that's okay. I believe that these course corrections come when they are meant to and that allowing ourselves to ebb and flow with change is the best way to actually end up where we are destined to be.
Even though it feels like I am in sync lately, I know that the road is not going to magically become flat, steady and predictable from here and I wouldn't want it any other way.
